*Beginner Sewing: The Basics. (Instructor: Meredith McDaniel of theHazelHive) Want to learn to sew? Just bought a sewing machine, or your sewing machine is shoved in a closet, but you want to get it out in time for some last minute holiday sewing? You wish you could hem your kiddos pants or sew a pillow to spice up the living room? You've found the right place! This class offers beginner sewers a relaxed atmosphere with a patient instructor who will offer a firm foundation in how-to-sew101 which will get you sewing in no time! A chance to get acquainted with basic fabric cutting ,measuring skills, basic machine use, stitching, hemming, and other techniques. This class is for people with little to no experience in sewing, plus you will take home your first simple pillow that night! Supply list will be provided. Thursday, December 2, 6:45-9:45 or Thursday, December 9, 6-9pm

whats in a name

i'm working on a more polished version of why i chose the name the Hazel Hive, but for now here it goes:

i have spent the last few weeks brainstorming words i like & things that have to do with mending, sewing, patching, creating, etc. but i also wanted it to be unique & reflect our family. so i think i've found the perfect mixture! hazel: mainly because i like the sound of it & the letters & i have hazel eyes [grady might too!]. hive: because it has multiple meanings...ben had 2 hives of honey bees in college & loves to talk about bees, hives are busy places where a lot of amazing work is done & intricate detail is expressed in the finished product of the comb, & its another "h" word to add some alliteration. i googled it & NOTHING popped up, its not copyrighted, & not on etsy!! plus the organic nature of the words are quite appealing to me of course & the geometric shape of the honeycomb & simplicity of the honeybee will be easy to work with for the logo.

also, the tagline Home. Hem. Heart. has some special meaning:

while grady was in my womb i was constantly reminded of the verses found in psalm 139. as i look at these three words i will be constantly reminded of this season of making our house a home upon our little one's arrival, us all being hemmed uniquely by our Creator, & always remembering to stay focused on the heart of it all:

"You hem me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me." psalm 139:5

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made...” psalm 139: 13-14
